Catawba is a red grape with a white or light rose juice. It is a spicy
flavored seeded slipskin with a pronounced labrusca aroma. It is a great jelly grape with it's distinct
flavor. It requires a long ripening season and if growing conditions permit, it will have
decent brix and great color. The vines are vigorous, hardy and productive. They are susceptible to
fungal diseases.
By nature and
ripening conditions permitted , it tends to have a high to very high acid and is blended with other lower
acid grapes (Niagara) or water to adjust. Most pink Catawba or red cat wines have had the
color enhanced with a red. It is popular locally as a sweet still or sparkling
wine.
